Piercings and Tattoos

Piercings and tattoos. Such controversy caused by such little things.

First, lets take piercings. These cause less issues when it comes to opinion. Some like them, some do not, but at worst, they can be taken out and the hole closes up naturally without harm done (in most cases).

So why, when people have piercings through the top of their nose, or the middle part, or anywhere else 'odd' are they looked at and judged upon as freaks by a large sector of the community?

What is it about people have piercings in less conventional places, or in abundance, that puts others at ill ease? Perhaps it is the notion of individuality and therefore, anything not being the norm, becomes a worry for the collective. Perhaps it is viewed, rightly or wrongly, as a form of self-harm.

Tattoos. Now these are more controversial. How many times do you hear someone say ' imagine what that will look like when they are 80' and never more so when it is a female who has a large tattoo somewhere prominent.

Well, I do not care what I look like at 80. No doubt, when I am 80, if I get there, I will be more concerned with keeping things from leaking, dropping, and remembering where my teeth are, and whether that squeak was the chair, or me!

In addition, anyone who gets tattoos to be in with the trend, is normally within a minority and strange, and usually will regret it as they got one for the wrong reasons. Most choose a tattoo as a permanent reminder of an event in their life. By marking this event with the tattoo, it teleports you back there instantly, every time you look at the marking. From choosing the design and the place, to the tattooist, to getting it done, and going through the healing process, it is not a light decision.

Unless you get the temp ones, a tattoo is for life. Life is short, and events are to be enjoyed. Personally, I would rather sit back at 80, look through my art, and remember the time surrounding it, with the people I was with, and the fun that I had, than being a plain sheet.

So next time you see someone with a piercing or a tattoo, dont pass judgement on what design they have, or what they have had done. It could represent a lot more to them than you think.

And if you wonder why so many people have more than 1, they are addictive!
